Hay River Atlantic Salmon Restocking Project
On October 29, 2012 over 400 juvenile Atlantic salmon were extracted from North Lake Creek for relocation into Hay River. North Lake has high densities of Atlantic salmon and we are anticipating high returns again this fall when we conduct our salmon redd surveys. With the assistance of Rosemary MacFarlane and Daryl Guignion, fish were extracted using an electrofisher. Hay River has been without native runs of Atlantic salmon for 10 years. Their disappearance can be attributed mainly to beaver blockages. Over the past number of years, remedial measures have been taken to restore spawning and foraging habitat through stream enhancement measures such as the removal of beaver dams and blockages. This river is more than capable of sustaining Atlantic salmon populations. All fish were fin clipped for identification purposes. We do not anticipate to see returns for at least three years. Many thanks to our staff, Rosemary, Daryl and many of our Board of Directors who volunteered with us for the day! Thanks as well to our funding partners the Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation!
